  Course Title: LLB (Hons)( Supported Open Learning)

This is a Supported Open Learning Programme leading to the LLB (Honours) Degree awarded by Northumbria University.The course provides students with a qualifying degree that gives exemption from the academic stage of training to become a solicitor or barrister. It mixes academic study with the practical applications of law and is a relevant qualification for a range of careers.

ICON College is the only Examination Centre in London for the Northumbria University LLB(Hons) Open Learning Programme and has been conducting the university's LLB(Hons) examination in May/June and August each year, since May 2005. ICON College has been delivering a structured Support Learning Programme for the Northumbria University LLB(Hons) Open Learning Programme since September 2004 and provide tution for all the subjects for years 1 to 4 of the programme. One of the ICON College's students won the North of England Medico-Legal Society Special Prize for Best Medical Law Student Year 3 in 2007.

  Course Length: The course duration is 3-4 years.
  Entry Requirements:

Applicants must be at least twenty-one years of age and demonstrate the necessary motivation, potential and knowledge to follow the course successfully. The normal minimum entry requirements are one of the following:

Passes in two subjects at A Level with passes in three other subjects at GCSE level (at grade C or above.

Passes in three subjects at A Level with a pass in one other subject at GCSE level (at grade C or above.

A BTEC Ordinary National Certificate or Diploma at a good standard.
or other equivalent qualifications.

Applicants will normally be required to have obtained a pass in English Language at GCSE level. Applicants without this qualification and all those for whom English is not their first language will have to satisfy the College of their competence in written and spoken English. For example IELTS scores of 5.5 or higher. The normal University requirements for English competency is IELTS 6.5 or equivalent.

However, candidates without formal qualifications, who are able to demonstrate that they possess appropriate study skills, have relevant experience, possess the capacity to sustain a course of study and have the necessary intellectual ability will be considered for admission onto the course.

  Course Information

ICON College students are given additional support with English language skills, study skills,practicing legal arguments, in addition to Law lectures and tutorials. The LLB is a full time course, and students will be required to attend 15 hours of classes each week, for 36 weeks a year. This time includes 5 hours a week of on-line work including access to notice boards and subject bulletin boards. All students are given an extensive set of study materials in each subject, including guidance notes.

The course is designed to give students an understanding of the operation of the English legal system, the diverse areas of law contained within that system and the methods employed by lawyers in using legal source materials. Throughout the route emphasis is placed on student-centred learning to foster research skills and initiative.

All students on this LLB degree programme will follow a customised IT for Legal Practitioners programme to enable them to maximise their use of the Internet and other IT facilities for research, coursework and preparation of relevant documents.

In the first three years of the course students will study the following subjects:
English Legal System
Contract Law
Criminal Law
Public Law
Property Law 1
Property Law 2
Tort
Law and institutions of the European Union.
Jurisprudence
Dissertation

Three options to be chosen from:

Medical Law
Law of Evidence
Company Law
Employment Law

Please, note that the options offered each year depend on student choice and staff availability. Students have the opportunity to submit a dissertation in their final year of study.
  Coursework and Assessment
Units are assessed by coursework and/or examinations.
